In a recent article in Charlotte, South Carolina’s “The Post and Courier” newspaper, Amy Dabbs, a Clemson University Extension Horticulture Agent and Master Gardener Coordinator encourages her readers to add cannas to their garden because they are reliable and have a lot to offer, including being attractive to hummingbirds.
She writes . . . “Here are a few good choices if you are considering adding cannas to your garden: ‘Tropicanna Gold’ and ‘Bengal Tiger” are tall cultivars with green and gold stripped foliage and bright yellow and orange flowers; mature height ranges between 4-6 feet. ‘Tropicanna Black’ makes a bold statement with deep purple to black foliage and red-orange flowers; mature height between 5-6 feet. ‘Phasion’ [the original Tropicanna] offers riotous foliage color that matures from deep purple to a multicolored striped leaf with green, yellow, pink and red. And if that isn’t enough color, orange flowers top these 3-6 foot stunners.”

‘Tropicanna Gold’ is distinguished by the unique bright gold border surrounding rich its orange blossoms.
